If they do it right, the persistent areas will be much better than an instanced area could ever be. I swear people need to go play LOTRO so they can find out how good persistent areas are.

I have. But i guess it is up to the individual who wants/needs the key to pay the amount asked.

Most MMORPGS are persistent worlds, however I've not run into the scenario you describe.

In other games i've played the chests aren't locked, they're just random spawns of free chests of loot and money.

However you seem to not be grasping the concept of the persistent world.
You can go into town and buy lockpicks (if such a thing exists in that game) and then go back to the chest, all without leaving an area or 'zoning', so the chest would still be there.

Your scenario doesn't seem to have anything to do with a persistent world. How does what you pose differ from GW now? You're in a zone with a locked chest but you don't have a lockpick...If you're alone you're SOL if you're in a group maybe you can get one off another player. So I don't get how the persistent world thing affects your scenario at all.

Maybe try a free trial of some of the games with persistent worlds so you can see what it's like. For the most part, it's more fun than the way gw is set up.

Tried persistent worlds in WoW and AoC and they weren't very good. I'd prefer instances so I can chat with people in towns and then do my gameplay alone.

I'd actually play more of Guild Wars if a singleplayer (offline) or private server option was made available.

First of all, screw the other guy. If it's a "very rare chest" then I'll open it instead and *hopefully* make more gold with the drop from it and the chance of retaining the lockpick as well, because it's also my only chance of opening that chest too. Second, it's very unlikely that he'd pay almost five times the going rate, since if you did sell him the pick, then the same situation may play out for him as well. And as long as lockpicks are readily available from merchants or a source where the price is governed, no one would want to pay more than that.
